A Great British St George's Day Party

Posted by: London Bus

April 24th marks the English holiday - St George's Day. For all those who don’t know, St George is the Patron Saint of England, as St Patrick is for Ireland.

We have had a number of requests to do an English themed day, this date seemd most appropriate.

A day of drinking warm English beer (if desired), games of croquet, sing-along’s to Beatles songs, pinata dragon smashing, fish and chips eating and God save the Queen-ing!

Prologue
There are numerous stories regarding the origin of the legend of St George, here is my favorite;

Medieval legend has it that a dragon made its nest at the spring that provided fresh water for the city of Silene in Libya. Every day, when the people went to collect their drinking water, they had to disturb the dragon, so they offered it sheep to keep it occupied....

When no sheep could be found, the people decided to offer the dragon a maiden from the city, chosen by drawing lots. One day the princess’s name was drawn and although her father begged for her life, she was offered to the dragon. As the dragon licked its lips, St George, an English knight fighting in the Crusades, came riding by.

Protecting himself with the sign of the cross, he slaughtered the dragon and rescued the princess. The grateful citizens then abandoned their traditional beliefs and converted to Christianity

OK, now that we are all upto speed - here's the plan:

The Date: April 24th
The Time: 2 - 6pm
The Start Location: The George and Dragon (of course)

The Plan: A lovely English Afternoon Activity
We shall begin at the George and Dragon Pub for pre departure supplies. Then off to the park for some croquet and piñata dragon smashing. Then off to the chippie for some grub. Sing-along’s back to the starting pub. Post 6pm George and Dragon pub will be hosting a big party with several live bands for all those that want to boogie.

The Cost a mere $10 per person, paid cash as you board

*WARNING*

There may be a local tv crew present - so comb your hair!
